Norwich Italians honored at award banquet

Cultural pride was in full display Sunday at a pair of Norwich events that honored local Italian-Americans. Under a bright blue sky, approximately 20 people gathered at the Christopher Columbus monument on Chelsea Parade for the 24th annual wreath-laying ceremony by the Italian Heritage and Cultural Committee of Norwich.

"There's 400 names on this monument, which was constructed in 1992 with money raised by Italian residents," said Frank Jacaruso, committee president. "To be Italian means recognizing the family. Things like family dinners and giving back to the community."
