On April 23, 1960, Nancy and Andrew Bertinelli welcomed their only daughter, Valerie, to the world. Andrew was an executive at General Motors and his family moved around quite a bit during his children's childhood. When Valerie was 11, the family relocated to Los Angeles. While on the playground at her new school, she befriended another young girl who acted in commercials. After interrogating her new classmate, Valerie decided she, too, wanted to act.
Her first big break came shortly after she had decided to seriously consider acting as a career. In June 1975, Valerie auditioned for a new series produced by Norman Lear. After three successful auditions, she was cast as Barbara Cooper in One Day at a Time. Though the series ended after nine seasons, Valerie continued to work in television and film. Most notably, she co-starred on Touched by an Angel and most recently on Hot in Cleveland. In May 2015, she narrated the Sons of Italy Foundation® short film Seize the Future.
