Vermont officially recognizes Indigenous Peoples' Day on Monday

The holiday formerly known as Columbus Day will be officially recognized by Vermont as "Indigenous Peoples' Day", starting on Monday, Oct. 14. Former Gov. Peter Shumlin began observing Indigenous Peoples' Day by gubernatorial proclamation in 2016, a tradition that his successor, Gov. Phil Scott, has maintained.

At the beginning of this year, a bill was introduced to the Vermont Legislature permanently changing the name of the national holiday from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. After a swift passage through Senate, and brief stalemate in the House, Scott signed the bill into law this past May.
