West Haven bocce court vegetable, flower garden vandalized

The tight-knit bunch down at the beachside John Barone Bocce Court along the boardwalk thought they were doing a nice thing when they planted a little vegetable garden adjacent to the court. They just don't understand the mentality of people who walk around wrecking other people's good work. After coming up with the idea and planting a smaller garden last year, the guys — well, mostly guys, anyway, — got the city to deliver a load of compost from West Haven's compost site.

They put that in after digging some sand out just outside the bocce court fence on the beach side of the well-maintained court and planted a nice array of tomato, eggplant, cucumber, squash and basil plants, along with some sunflowers, this past spring. It was an all-volunteer undertaking. The bocce players, many of them Italian-American, bought the plants at Home Depot and Lowe's themselves.
