Almost every Saturday since Bill Greco's beloved church burned down in a spectacular fire a year ago, the semiretired Italian-American Catholic has been collecting bottles and aluminum cans from the county fairgrounds to raise money for the rebuilding.
"I got some guff for taking it from the fairgrounds, but I can deal with it," he said recently at a polenta-and-sausage dinner served in the hall of Holy Cross Church in this suburban city's old Northside neighborhood. "I think I've collected about $1,000, and I'm going to keep going until they tell me stop or when the new church opens."
