Over the summer, calls for the removal of Christopher Columbus statues were being made across the country amid Black Lives Matter protests. The City of Columbus was once home to three statues of the city's namesake. Now, the Christopher Columbus statue at both City Hall and Columbus State Community College have been removed.
“We were contacted by the city, and we did our best to react as quickly as the statue came down, we had maybe 24 hours,” said Joseph, with Columbus Piave Club. A spokesperson from the city said the Columbus Art Commission will form a committee to decide on a final place for the statue. They will also find artwork to replace it, but that process has not started yet. At Columbus State, a private donor paid for the removal and storage of the statue. The college has not made any decisions on potential replacements.
