Vincent Bommarito Sr., who helmed top St. Louis restaurant Tony's, dead at 88

Vincent Bommarito Sr., who turned his father’s spaghetti tavern into St. Louis’ standard for fine dining, died Monday (April 1, 2019) of kidney failure at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. He was 88. Tony’s, in downtown St. Louis, evolved into the pinnacle of elegance and gourmet fare in the decades that Mr. Bommarito ran it, winning numerous Michelin and Mobil awards, along with other culinary honors.

“He is a legend, it’s that simple,” said Kevin Nashan, the James Beard Award-winning chef at Sidney Street Cafe and Peacemaker. “He and his family defined fine dining, they defined hospitality in St. Louis,” Nashan said. “He made sure everyone who walked into Tony’s felt like a king or a queen.”
