In years past, organizers of the St. Anthony Italian Festival have used wood chips and stones to cope with wet fields. Not this year. There's just too much water. The festival commission decided Saturday morning to postpone the annual festival, which was scheduled for Labor Day weekend. The commission will meet again Wednesday to try to pick a new date, said member Susan Sinicropi. Members are looking at the end of September or early October.
"It's definitely a postponement, not a total cancellation at this point," she said. The festival, which is held on Ovid Street, includes rides as well as a Sunday procession to St. Patrick's Church and the presentation of the Father Joseph Beatini Award. Recent rains mean organizers cannot complete the necessary setup work at the field.
