With so many charming restaurants to choose from in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter, diners can overlook some of the gleaming jewels on the local food scene. One such place is Acqua Al 2, near the foot of Fifth Avenue between J and K streets, not far from Petco Park, the glorious Central Library and the vast San Diego Convention Center.
Owner/Executive Chef Martin Gonzalez opened his first Acqua Al 2 in Florence, Italy in 1979, developing an international reputation for creative Tuscan cuisine in the bustling Piazza della Signoria near a famous theater. He then decided to open his first American eatery in San Diego, settling on a rustic site that housed the Superior Meat Co. from 1938-1961. He would later add a location in Washington DC.
