Italy men's volleyball is world champion for the fourth time in its history, 24 years after the last. In the final played Sunday night in Katowice, it beat Poland, the defending national champion for seven years, 3-1 in a comeback, who together with Brazil had shared the last five editions of the World Championships.
In the Katowice final, Italy coached by former setter Ferdinando De Giorgi lost the first set 25-22. In the second, just when it seemed that Poland, pushed by the arena crowd entirely on its side, could continue to extend its lead, it was able to react and ended up winning it 25-21. The third set ended with an even bigger gap, 25-18, while in the decisive set victory came with an equally clear 25-20.
With the appointment of De Giorgi after the disappointing Tokyo Olympics, the national team had begun a process of renewal dictated by an inevitable generational change, and a new generation of players of the highest level quickly grew up: from captain Simone Giannelli to the various Yuri Romanò, Alessandro Michieletto and Daniele Lavia, all of whom were decisive in the victories achieved in this World Championship, as they were a year ago at the European Championships.
In the final awards, Gianluca Galassi was named best center of the World Championship, Fabio Balaso best libero, Giannelli best setter and also best player (MVP) of the tournament.
