Embracing Italian Culture: A Festive Journey Through Carnival at Suffolk County Community College

February 2024, marked a vibrant celebration of Italian culture as the renowned Italian Carnival journeyed to Suffolk County Community College. The event was hosted by Incanto Productions, a distinguished theatrical company dedicated to authentic creative works for educational purposes. It aimed to promote the country of Italy and foster the learning of the Italian language among students.

Upon invitation extended by Dr. Annamaria Monaco, Professor of Italian and Advisor of the Italian Club at the college's Ammerman Campus ,the carnival extravaganza was enthusiastically embraced and greeted by the attendees. The exciting journey took place in the college's lovely lecture hall, where students were treated to an hour of edutainment, blending education with entertainment seamlessly.

Starting with an informative presentation on Italy's famous carnival events, the audience journeyed from the captivating streets of Venice to the vibrant festivities of Viareggio, Fano, Putignano, Ronciglione, and Mamoiada. The event was  highlighted when two lucky students appeared on stage wearing authentic Venetian costumes graciously provided by Incanto Productions. As they paraded across the stage, embodying the spirit of Venetian tradition, the atmosphere became infused with a sense of joy and wonder.

Following this enchanting display, the audience was introduced to two iconic figures of Italian Carnival: Arlecchino and Pulcinella. Portrayed with finesse by performer Pasqualino Beltempo, each character was introduced by Simona Rodano and delivered an engaging monologue in Italian, regaling the audience with tales of mischief and merriment. Accompanied by lively songs, the performances invited participation from the audience, creating moments of shared festivity and cultural immersion.

The event was also joined by the world language chairperson Dr. Maria Nieves Alonso Almagro, and the professor of Spanish, Dr. Ana Menendez who recognized the significance of such initiatives in promoting cultural exchange and understanding. As the curtains closed on this unforgettable journey through Italian carnival, attendees departed with a newfound appreciation for the rich tapestry of Italian culture and the enduring legacy of carnival traditions.

The Italian carnival's presentation at the Suffolk County Community College served as a testament to the power of cultural exchange and education in fostering unity and appreciation for diversity. Thanks to  the collaboration of Incanto Productions and Dr. Annamaria Monaco, students appreciated and enjoyed a unique event.
