Sal and Mimma's Italian Restaurant is now open in place of Luigi's Italian Restaurant along Warwick Boulevard in the Denbigh area of Newport News. The restaurant opened Sept. 7 and offers delivery, dine-in, catering and carry-out Italian food. The reopening comes after the Luigi's Italian Restaurant closed in October 2014 and then reopened in 2016. It was also home to El Gran Maya, a Mexican restaurant that replaced Luigi’s after its initial closing almost two years ago.
The location will stick to its Italian roots during its next phase, led by new owners who have experience in the industry. Mimma Lopiccolo, who previously owned Anna’s Pizza at Buckroe Beach before selling it her youngest son, is one of the new owners along with her son Sal Lopiccolo. She also owned Joe and Mimma’s, which closed in June 2016 location and was named after her and her brother Joe.
