A remarkable new chapter for Italian American culture has begun in Des Moines, Iowa, where the Italian American Cultural Center has opened its magnificent new headquarters following a $20 million transformation of the historic Butler Mansion.
The grand opening celebrations began October 25, 2026, with a public event featuring Italian food, traditional dancing, guided tours, and family activities. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for October 26.
Located on a 7-acre property overlooking downtown Des Moines, the renovated complex combines the elegance of a 1930s mansion with modern facilities dedicated to preserving and celebrating Italian heritage.
The approximately 31,000-square-foot center includes a museum, Italian marketplace, café, culinary classrooms, educational spaces, and accommodations for overnight guests. Its spectacular two-story ballroom can welcome up to 500 people, creating opportunities for weddings, conferences, and community celebrations.
The museum, still under development, will explore the experiences and contributions of Italian immigrants in Iowa. Future additions include a 16,000-square-foot indoor bocce pavilion with 5 courts, designed to host competitions and cultural gatherings.
The initiative represents the culmination of a 25-year vision supported by generations of Italian Americans. The organization itself was established 45 years ago, thanks to founder Patricia Civitate's determination to bring the community together.
Under the leadership of President Paolo Bartesaghi and Board Chairman Jeff Lamberti, the center welcomes visitors of every background.
More than an architectural achievement, this extraordinary investment demonstrates how Italian American communities continue turning their heritage into lasting opportunities for education, connection, and cultural pride.
