AI learns Italian hand gestures to improve real-time communication

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Researchers at the Politecnico di Torino are developing a new artificial intelligence system designed to understand and translate one of the most distinctive elements of Italian culture – hand gestures. The project aims to bridge communication gaps by teaching machines how to interpret physical expressions that often carry as much meaning as spoken words.

Italian communication is famously rich in gestures, with dozens of commonly recognized movements used in everyday conversation. For example, the well-known “pinched fingers” gesture can express confusion, emphasis, or even frustration depending on context.
