Cards over cash: Italy's digital payment revolution reaches a turning point

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy's relationship with money is changing rapidly. A country once known for its strong attachment to cash is increasingly embracing digital payments, and recent data suggest that electronic transactions are now becoming the preferred method of payment for millions of consumers.

In 2024, Italians spent approximately €481 billion using digital payment systems, an increase of more than 8% compared with the previous year. For the first time, electronic payments accounted for 43% of all consumer spending, slightly surpassing cash, which fell to 41%. The remaining share consisted of other payment methods, including bank transfers, checks, and direct debits.
