Enel expands its U.S. footprint with $140 million solar acquisition

Italy’s Enel is strengthening its position in the United States with the completion of a $140 million acquisition that adds seven operating solar power plants to the company’s American portfolio.

The transaction, completed through Enel Green Power North America, follows an agreement signed in May 2026 with a U.S. utility. The seven photovoltaic facilities have approximately 270 MW of combined installed capacity and generate an average of about 0.4 TWh of electricity annually.

The investment also expands the Italian energy group into three U.S. states where it previously had no operating presence. Two plants are located in Virginia, totaling more than 120 MW, while North Carolina hosts one facility with more than 90 MW. Four additional plants in South Carolina provide approximately 50 MW of capacity.

Enel valued the acquisition at approximately $140 million, or about €124 million at the October 1 exchange rate. The transaction will increase the group’s net financial debt by approximately $180 million, including debt connected with leasing arrangements.

The economic contribution is expected to be significant. Enel estimates that the newly acquired American assets will add approximately $20 million, or €18 million, to consolidated ordinary EBITDA each year.

The acquisition is part of Enel’s strategy of expanding renewable generation through investments in operating assets in major international markets. Globally, Enel Green Power now manages approximately 67 GW of renewable capacity across solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal and storage technologies.

For Italy–U.S. economic relations, the deal represents another substantial Italian investment in American infrastructure. It combines Italian energy expertise with growing U.S. electricity demand and gives one of Italy’s largest multinational groups an even broader operational presence across the United States.
