Italy has reached a landmark moment in sustainable transportation with the approval of the country’s first hydrogen-powered passenger trains. The authorization clears the way for commercial service on the Brescia–Iseo–Edolo railway in Lombardy, placing Italy among the European leaders developing zero-emission alternatives for regional rail travel.
The approval was granted by Italy’s National Agency for the Safety of Railways and Road and Motorway Infrastructure (ANSFISA) after a technical and regulatory process that began in 2022. It is the first Authorization for Entry into Service ever issued in Italy for hydrogen-powered trains, representing the final major regulatory milestone before passenger operations begin.
