From family apartments to flexible living: how Italian homes are being reinvented

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy’s housing landscape is being reshaped by a quiet but significant transformation: homes once designed for large families are adapting to smaller households, new working habits and an aging population. The shift is creating opportunities for architects, builders and communities to rethink how existing spaces can better serve modern life.

During the economic boom of the 1960s, many Italian apartments featured several bedrooms, a separate kitchen, formal living areas and long hallways. Contemporary designs increasingly favor connected kitchens and living rooms, flexible bedrooms, efficient storage and spaces that can alternate between work, study and relaxation. The goal is not necessarily to build bigger homes, but to make every square foot more useful.
