Growing museum audiences open new opportunities for Italy’s cultural heritage

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy’s museums are welcoming growing audiences, offering an encouraging sign of the enduring appeal of the country’s artistic and historical treasures. Visitor numbers have moved beyond their previous pandemic benchmark, while municipal cultural spending is also increasing. Together, these developments provide a foundation for making heritage more accessible across the country.

Provisional figures for 2025 show that approximately 4,700 museums, galleries, archaeological sites, monuments, and monumental complexes were open to the public. Their number increased by 5.9% compared with 2022. Attendance grew even faster, rising 30.5% over the same period and exceeding the 2019 level by 8.4%.
