Hidden Calabria: the wild island of caves

By: Emma Donaldson

Picture an island just a few paddle strokes from the beach, with water that changes from turquoise to blue, and a "ghost town" perched on top. Dino Island, off Praia a Mare, is one of the most surprising features of the Calabrian Tyrrhenian Sea: dark cliffs, luminous caves, and a seabed that reads like a map.

Dino Island rises in the Gulf of Policastro, along the northern stretch of Calabria’s Tyrrhenian coast. Just a few hundred metres from the mainland beach, its profile is an unmistakable feature of the view, with the Torre di Fiuzzi and Capo Arena acting as constant landmarks along this part of the coast.
