Holy Crucifix Feast in Monreale: the vibrant Sicilian festival of faith and tradition

By: Elisa Verrazzo

Every year in spring the historic charming town of Monreale, nestled in the hills above Palermo, hosts one of Sicily’s most moving religious festivals, the feast of the Holy Crucifix. This centuries-old religious celebration dating back to the 17th century is more than just a local tradition, it's a vibrant expression of Sicilian faith and identity.

In fact from the 1st of May to the 3rd of May Monreale comes alive with devotion, music, and cultural festivities during the three-days celebration blends sacred traditions, folkloric flair, and heartfelt local pride. This timeless celebration of faith is a unique event to attend even though you are not Christian and it is an incredible opportunity to live one of the most vibrant feasts in Sicily.
