Twenty-five years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, American service members based in Vicenza will stand alongside their Italian friends and partners to remember the victims – a powerful reminder that the relationship between Italy and the United States is not only an alliance between governments, but also a bond between communities.
On September 11, 2026, U.S. Army Garrison Italy Soldiers, military police officers and firefighters will join Italian officials and first responders in Padova for the 25th anniversary commemoration at Memoria e Luce, one of Europe’s most significant memorials dedicated to 9/11.
Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, who also created the master plan for the reconstruction of Ground Zero, the monument is a 17-meter glass structure shaped like an open book. Its pages symbolically point toward Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. At its heart is something even more powerful – a twisted steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center and donated by the United States to Veneto and the City of Padova.
The ceremony also highlights the special place occupied by the American military community in Vicenza. U.S. service members stationed there do much more than represent America’s defense commitment to Europe. They live in Italian communities, interact with local residents and institutions, and create everyday human connections between the two countries.
The relationship was clearly visible during the 2025 commemoration, when American Soldiers and first responders gathered with their Italian counterparts. Wreaths from U.S. Army Vicenza and the City of Padova stood side by side beneath the American, Italian and European flags.
A quarter-century after 9/11, remembrance therefore becomes another expression of friendship. In Padova, Americans and Italians will honor those who died while reaffirming a partnership built over generations – and kept alive every day by the Americans who serve, work and live in Italy.
