ITA Airways returns to top of Europe for on-time performance

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

ITA Airways has returned to the top of Europe’s punctuality rankings for the first time in four years, posting one of its strongest operational performances in January 2026. During the month, the Italian national carrier operated 9,406 flights, with 86.8% arriving on schedule. In industry terms, a flight is considered on time if it lands within 15 minutes of its scheduled arrival, including standard taxi time.

That figure translates to roughly 87 out of every 100 flights reaching their destination without significant delay. The result placed ITA Airways ahead of several major European competitors and ranked it among the three most punctual airlines globally for the month.

Equally important was the airline’s completion rate. ITA Airways operated 99.11% of its scheduled flights, meaning cancellations affected less than 1% of planned departures. In a winter period often marked by adverse weather conditions, air traffic congestion, and operational strain across Europe, that level of reliability stood out.

The improved punctuality reflects targeted efforts to strengthen operational efficiency. The airline has refined turnaround procedures, improved crew planning, and enhanced coordination with airports and air traffic authorities. Investments in fleet renewal have also played a role. Newer aircraft generally require less unscheduled maintenance and offer greater fuel efficiency, contributing to smoother daily operations.

Over the past several years, airlines across Europe have faced persistent disruptions linked to staffing shortages and airspace congestion. ITA Airways’ January performance suggests progress in managing those challenges more effectively. By minimizing delays and cancellations, the carrier has strengthened its reputation among both business and leisure travelers.

For passengers flying through Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate, higher punctuality can mean more reliable connections and fewer unexpected schedule changes. Starting 2026 with an on-time rate approaching 87% sends a strong signal about the airline’s operational direction and its ambition to remain among Europe’s most dependable carriers.
