Italian banks rise from crisis-era laggards to European market leaders

Italy’s banking industry has completed one of the most impressive turnarounds in European finance. Institutions once associated with bad loans, emergency capital increases, weak profitability, and discounted valuations are now among the continent’s strongest performers.

Higher earnings have contributed to the recovery, but the transformation is also rooted in cleaner balance sheets, tighter cost control, stronger capital, and renewed investor confidence. The improvement is visible across the entire system.
