Italian oncology is moving further toward personalized medicine, with new research on the immune system and expanding use of genomic testing offering 2 different routes toward the same goal – treating cancer more precisely while avoiding therapies that patients may not need.
Researchers at Humanitas in Milan have mapped the characteristics and relationships of regulatory T cells, known as Tregs, inside tumors. These cells normally perform an essential function by preventing excessive immune reactions, but cancer can exploit them to suppress the immune system’s ability to attack malignant cells.
