Italian exports recorded strong growth in August 2026, with the United States emerging as one of the most dynamic markets for Italian products.
According to new data released by Italy's National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), exports increased by 9% in value compared with August 2025, while export volumes rose by 1.9%.
The American market delivered particularly encouraging results. Italian exports to the United States jumped 31.2% year over year, significantly outperforming overall export growth. The increase highlights the importance of the United States as a destination for Italian manufacturing and Made in Italy products.
Exports to countries outside the European Union increased by 16.7%, compared with just 1.6% growth in shipments to EU markets. Switzerland recorded a 57.1% increase, while exports to China rose 32.7%.
Several industrial sectors contributed to Italy's performance. Automobile exports increased by 55.8%, refined petroleum products by 55.4%, and metals and metal products by 26.5%. Food, beverages, and tobacco, among Italy's most recognizable export categories, registered 5.4% growth.
During the first eight months of 2026, total Italian exports increased by 5%. Italy's trade surplus reached €34.7 billion, compared with €32.5 billion during the corresponding period in 2025.
The August figures underline the strength of Italy's international trade, particularly its commercial relationship with the United States. However, the difference between export growth in value and volume also shows why both indicators matter when evaluating economic performance.
