Italy’s landscapes have been studied by botanists for centuries, yet the country’s plant life continues to reveal unexpected treasures. A major new scientific assessment has found that 453 plant taxa new to science were described within Italian territory between 2005 and 2025. Of these, 443 are endemic, meaning they occur naturally only in Italy.
The findings come from an extensive review conducted by 47 researchers associated with universities, botanical institutions, and the Italian Botanical Society. The team examined 3,902 local floristic publications produced over 20 years, creating an updated picture of botanical knowledge across Italy’s 20 regions.
