Italian researchers have achieved a promising advance in neurotechnology, enabling four people with severe spinal cord injuries to stand and walk with a walker by using small voluntary movements of their upper body to control electrical stimulation of the spinal cord.
The experimental approach was developed by the MINE Lab, a collaboration involving IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital and Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan and the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. The research brings together neurosurgery, rehabilitation and bioengineering to develop practical technologies for people living with paralysis.
