Italian healthcare has recorded an extraordinary international first at Molinette Hospital in Turin, where surgeons restored partial vision to a 67-year-old woman through an unprecedented transplant involving the central retina and the front portion of the eye.
The patient, identified as Elena, had been completely blind for more than 5 years following a serious traffic accident. The collision permanently damaged the optic nerve in her left eye, preventing visual signals from reaching the brain. However, the cornea, retina, and other anatomical structures in that eye remained healthy.
