A groundbreaking operation performed in Turin has opened a new frontier in eye surgery. At Molinette Hospital, part of the Città della Salute e della Scienza di Torino, a 67-year-old woman regained vision after more than 5 years of complete blindness through a procedure never previously performed in this form.
The patient, Elena, had lost her sight following a serious car accident. The damage to her 2 eyes was severe but different. Her left eye had an irreversibly damaged optic nerve and could no longer transmit visual information to the brain, although other structures remained healthy. Her right eye still had a functioning optic nerve, but its cornea, retina and other tissues had been badly compromised.
