Italy backs 20 fragile heritage sites through FAI’s Luoghi del Cuore program

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

In 2026, a nationwide effort in Italy will support the recovery of 20 fragile cultural and natural landmarks through targeted restoration projects aimed at protecting lesser-known heritage sites. The initiative is part of the Luoghi del Cuore program promoted by FAI (Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano), which channels public support and private funding toward places that are deeply rooted in local history but face risks linked to neglect, environmental exposure or limited financial resources.

The total funding package for this round amounts to €700,000, marking the largest allocation since the program was launched. Of that sum, €520,000 will be distributed directly among the 20 selected projects, with individual grants reaching up to €50,000 depending on the scope and urgency of the intervention. An additional €180,000 is reserved for the top three sites that received the highest level of public backing, allowing for more comprehensive conservation plans and long-term maintenance strategies.
