Italy–U.S., MoU on America250: diplomacy, alliance and history

In Washington, Italian Ambassador Marco Peronaci signed a Memorandum of Understanding with America250 to support the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence (July 4, 2026). The agreement symbolically links the American Semiquincentennial with the 165th anniversary of Italy–U.S. diplomatic relations. The signing took place at Villa Firenze, the ambassador’s residence.

The political message is clear: the bilateral bond with Italy remains a pillar of U.S. Western projection, despite ongoing tensions with the European Union. Rome is seen as a stable actor within the strategic architecture stretching from the Mediterranean to Africa, and across key nodes of economic and energy security.
