Italy’s “5×1000” program allows taxpayers to allocate 0.5% of their income tax – already owed to the state – to nonprofit organizations, scientific and medical research institutions, universities, municipalities, amateur sports associations, and cultural initiatives.
The contribution does not cost taxpayers anything extra and is made directly through the annual tax return by signing a dedicated section and, optionally, entering the tax code of a chosen organization. If no preference is indicated, the funds remain with the state. The system has become one of Italy’s most important tools for supporting the nonprofit sector and public-interest activities.
