Italy’s consumer spending shifts as food costs rise and services reshape demand

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Consumer behavior in Italy is entering a new phase in 2026, shaped by inflation, changing priorities, and pressure on household budgets. While overall spending continues, the composition of that spending is evolving – with food and essential services absorbing a growing share of income, leaving less room for discretionary purchases.

One of the most visible trends is the sustained increase in food prices. Since 2021, grocery costs have risen by nearly 25%, significantly outpacing general inflation, which grew about 17% over the same period. This gap has had a direct impact on consumption habits, forcing many families to cut back or switch to lower-cost alternatives.
