Italy continues to rank among Europe’s healthiest and longest-living countries, combining high life expectancy with strong performance in disease prevention, treatment, and access to care. In 2024, life expectancy at birth reached a record 84.1 years, the highest level in the European Union alongside Sweden.
This marked an increase of 0.6 years compared with 2023 and placed Italy nearly two and a half years above the EU average. The figure also confirms a full rebound from the COVID-19 shock, exceeding the pre-pandemic level recorded in 2019 by six months.
