Italy’s national rail group has announced an ambitious plan to invest €20 billion in technology and innovation by 2034 – a move that marks one of the largest modernization programs ever launched in the country’s transport sector.
The strategy aims to create a fully digital, efficient and sustainable mobility network capable of supporting both passengers and freight while contributing to Italy’s broader environmental goals. At the center of the plan is the complete rollout of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) across the country’s main network by 2040.
