Italian communities across the United States are strengthening their cooperation following the election of Mabi Palmisano as coordinator of Intercomites USA, the organization connecting the country's 10 Committees of Italians Abroad (Comites).
The election took place on October 17, 2026, at the Italian Embassy in Washington, DC, during Italian American Heritage Month. Representatives discussed initiatives designed to improve services, celebrate Italian heritage, and encourage nationwide collaboration.
Among the most promising projects is Tracing Italian Roots, launched in Washington to preserve the experiences of Italian immigrants and Italian Americans. Already expanded to New York, the initiative has attracted interest from Los Angeles and Miami. It holds particular significance as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary of independence in 2026.
Another initiative, Sportello Comites, aims to assist Italian citizens navigating consular services, passport applications, and citizenship procedures. The project is awaiting formal confirmation of government funding.
The meeting also addressed upcoming Comites elections. Across the United States, 14 candidate lists were submitted, representing a 20% decline compared with 2021. Participants advocated simpler procedures, particularly regarding the 100 or 200 signatures required for electoral participation.
Joint sporting initiatives celebrating Italy's Republic Day were also highlighted as opportunities to bring communities together.
Under Palmisano's leadership, Intercomites USA aims to transform successful local initiatives into nationwide programs, strengthening connections among Italian institutions, expatriates, and Italian Americans while celebrating the enduring relationship between Italy and the United States.
