Full funding has been achieved to replace Baltimore's Christopher Columbus statue with a memorial in Baltimore's Little Italy neighborhood. A memorial to Italian immigrant families will take the place of the Columbus statue that protesters tore down and threw into the harbor in 2020.
It was one of several Christopher Columbus statues removed following George Floyd's death. Italian American Organizations United raised money to cover the memorial at a cost of more than $200,000 - that's in addition to funds raised to recover the Columbus statue and send a replica on loan to the federal government for display outside of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House grounds.
