Monumenti aperti marks 30 years with 800 sites across Italy

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Italy is once again turning its cultural heritage into a shared, nationwide experience, as Monumenti Aperti celebrates its 30th anniversary with an expanded edition that spans most of the country. From April 18 to November 8, 2026, more than 800 historic sites will open to the public across 18 regions and 85 cities, offering free access to places that are often closed or little known.

What began in 1997 as a local initiative in Cagliari has grown into one of Italy’s most widespread cultural events. Over three decades, the project has transformed into a model of community-driven heritage promotion, involving thousands of volunteers, students, and local organizations.
