On the outside, Moleskine looks like any other store, but within its walls is an ever-growing New York City connection. The modern-day Moleskine brand started in 1997 by Maria Sebregondi, who was inspired by Bruce Chatwin’s travel book “The Songlines.” Chatwin was known for traveling with a small black notebook to record his travels, which sparked Sebregondi to revive this idea for travelers, creatives and thinkers alike.
In 2008, Moleskine America began to operate as a subsidiary under its current name, setting up its headquarters in New York City. The brand currently has six store locations throughout the city, and has a presence in several independent bookstores such as The Strand, Rizzoli and Books Are Magic.
