Move over Tuscany: why Umbria is Italy’s next great countryside escape

Often referred to as the ‘Green Heart of Italy,’ under the radar Umbria has long played second fiddle to neighbouring Tuscany. Over the last few years though, a new generation of countryside hotels have emerged, putting Umbria on the map as a region that offers all the Tuscan hallmarks – rolling green hills, vineyards and medieval towns – without the crowds.

None of the big hotel brands have moved in (yet), which means Umbria's best hotels remain authentically Italian, with nonna-style garden-to-table cooking and warm make-yourself-at-home service. Italians have of course always known of its allure. mbria is notably home to the birthplace of St. France, Patron saint of Italy, as well as the HQ of world famous cashmere king Brunello Cucinelli – don't miss the brand's outlet in Solomeo.
