New mural celebrates Italian heritage in Springfield’s south end, MA

By: Kayleigh Thomas

A new mural celebrating Italian heritage was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Italian Cultural Center in Springfield’s south end. The mural, titled ‘Sunday Dinner,’ was painted by artist Eric Okdeh in collaboration with Common Wealth Murals. It depicts four generations of an Italian family sharing a meal, with all models being members of the Italian Cultural Center.

“It feels great. It’s, you know, just being able to hear how much it’s meant to people walking by every single day, many of whom lived on this block their entire lives,” said muralist Eric Okdeh. President of the Italian Cultural Center Charles Becker adds, “The mural came out fantastic. All I can think about every time I see it, it really just speaks out. The words family, food, and faith.”
