Newark celebrates the 127th annual Feast of St. Gerard Maiella

One of New Jersey’s most cherished Italian American religious traditions returns to Newark this October as St. Lucy’s Church, home of the National Shrine of St. Gerard Maiella, celebrates the 127th annual Feast of St. Gerard Maiella, the beloved patron saint of mothers, motherhood and expectant mothers.

The celebration takes place from October 15 through October 18, 2026, at St. Lucy’s Church, located at 118 Seventh Avenue in Newark. For generations, the feast has brought together Italian American families, pilgrims and visitors to honor a saint whose devotion remains particularly strong among communities with roots in southern Italy.

Religious observances begin before the feast with the St. Gerard Novena, running from October 6 through October 14. Each evening at 7:00 PM, participants gather for prayers and blessings with the saint’s relic. Special intentions include families affected by cancer, heart disease, autism and other challenges, as well as women hoping to conceive.

On Friday, October 16, Masses will be celebrated at 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 AM and 12:15 PM, with a Solemn High Mass at 11:00 AM.

On Saturday, October 17, Masses will follow the same schedule, including Italian-language services at 9:00 and 10:00 AM and a Solemn High Mass at 11:00 AM.

Beyond the religious ceremonies, the festivities feature processions, live entertainment, traditional food, games and family activities.

Now entering its 127th year, Newark’s Feast of St. Gerard Maiella continues to celebrate the enduring connection between Italian faith, heritage and community life in America.
