Old friends keep the tradition of playing cards in Omaha's Little Italy alive

By: Eddie Messel

We have seen so many changes around the Omaha Metro over the years, but one group of old friends in Omaha's Little Italy has seen more than most. There is one thing that has always stayed the same: a long-standing tradition dating back to the 1920s. Caniglia's Dry Goods store is one of Little Italy's oldest buildings, having opened in 1929.

"I bought shoes down here when I was 7, 8, 9 years old and didn't have to bring any money down. My dad would just send me down here, and my dad would get the bill later," longtime Little Italy resident Joe Caniglia said.
