On vacation like roman emperors: a 2-day escape to Campi Flegrei's hidden coast near Naples

Before Capri, before Sorrento, and long before the Amalfi Coast became one of Italy’s most recognisable images, the elite of ancient Rome looked elsewhere: emperors, senators and aristocrats chose the Campi Flegrei, a coastline shaped by fire and overlooking a luminous sea, where villas, thermal baths and harbours turned leisure into an art form.

This was the Roman Riviera, an oasis devoted to otium: political encounters far from the Forum, banquets by the sea and residences built to impress.
