Philadelphia celebrates Italian American Heritage Week and honors Bob Pantano

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Philadelphia is officially recognizing the enduring contribution of its Italian American community by designating October 11–17, 2026, as Italian American Heritage Week, while honoring legendary Philadelphia broadcaster Bob Pantano as Grand Marshal of the 2026 Philadelphia Italian American Heritage Parade.

Resolution 260827 was introduced in the Philadelphia City Council on October 1 with 12 councilmembers listed as sponsors. The measure recognizes both the historical importance of Italian Americans to the city and one of Philadelphia’s longest-running ethnic celebrations.

The annual parade traces its history to South Philadelphia in 1957, giving the tradition nearly 70 years of history. The 1492 Society will organize the 2026 edition on Sunday, October 11. Participants will include members of the Italian American community throughout the Delaware Valley, Philadelphia’s famous Mummers string bands, school marching bands and other groups representing the city’s diverse communities.

The celebration will continue at Marconi Plaza with an Italian Festival featuring food, music and dance inspired by Italy’s different regions.

This year’s Grand Marshal, Bob Pantano, has been part of Philadelphia’s entertainment scene for more than half a century. A South Philadelphia native, he began working record hops in the late 1960s and entered professional radio at WCAM in Camden, New Jersey, in 1971.

In 1977, Pantano launched “The Saturday Night Dance Party.” Nearly 50 years later, the live program continues every Saturday on 98.1 WOGL HD2 and Audacy and is recognized by the City Council resolution as the nation’s longest-running radio dance party.

Philadelphia’s 2026 celebration therefore brings together heritage, popular culture and community – highlighting a local Italian American tradition that continues to evolve across generations.
