Sicily, as everyone knows, is roughly triangular in shape. It is no coincidence that it was once known as Trinacria, or that its symbol, since Greek and Roman times, has been the three-legged triscele.
Its three points are Cape Boeo, or Lilybaeum, near Trapani; Cape Faro, near Messina; and Cape Passero, in the territory of Portopalo, in the province of Syracuse. The first two mark the island’s northern side, one to the west and the other to the east, while the third stretches out from Sicily’s southeastern corner.
