Renaissance masterpieces from Siena on display at New York's Frick Collection

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Nearly 40 masterpieces of Renaissance bronze sculpture have arrived in New York for "Siena: The Art of Bronze, 1450–1500," an exhibition at The Frick Collection running from October 15, 2026, through January 18, 2027.

Presented in the Ronald S. Lauder Exhibition Galleries at 1 East 70th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues, the exhibition explores Siena's extraordinary achievements in bronze sculpture during the second half of the 15th century.

Visitors can admire statues, religious reliefs, portrait medals, candelabra, and decorative objects created by leading Renaissance artists, including Donatello, Vecchietta, and Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Many of these works have never previously traveled outside Tuscany, making their appearance in the United States particularly significant.

The exhibition reveals how Sienese craftsmen transformed bronze into remarkably sophisticated works of art, combining technical experimentation with religious devotion, civic identity, and political ambition.

Among the highlights are monumental sculptures, intricate bronze reliefs, and smaller objects demonstrating the versatility of Renaissance metalworking. The presentation also examines the artistic rivalry between Siena and Florence and the challenges faced by sculptors working with this demanding material.

Curated by Giulio Dalvit, the exhibition brings together loans from major Italian and international museums, offering an opportunity to discover a lesser-known chapter of Italian Renaissance history.

The Frick Collection recommends timed admission tickets. The exhibition remains open through January 18, 2027, providing New Yorkers and visitors with three months to explore Siena's remarkable bronze-making tradition.
