Italians are eating more rice lately – it’s not just a staple but becoming a regular feature of both home meals and outings. In 2025, rice consumption rose by nearly 7% compared to the previous year – a signal that many people are turning back to this age-old grain for its flavor, versatility, and benefits.
Over half of Italians now say they eat rice at home at least once a week. A significant share (13.5%) enjoys rice three or more times weekly in their own kitchens. Outside home too, rice is gaining ground – about one person in six eats rice at restaurants, trattorias, or ethnic spots (Japanese, Chinese, etc.) at least once a week. The trend is particularly strong among younger consumers, who often prefer alternative preparations beyond classic risotto.
