'Rich history': Community celebrates Italian heritage

The aroma of fresh bread and simmering sauce filled the air Sunday inside a Windber Recreation Park pavilion in Windber, PA. It evoked memories of “Nonna’s kitchen,” Joe Carpenter said. It was exactly the flavor Italian Sons and Daughters of America’s Joseph Johns Lodge 214 members said they were striving for when they envisioned Greater Johnstown Italian Day.

Carpenter, the lodge’s president, and committee chair Joanne DeBarto Smith said they borrowed from Columbus Day-style “Italian-American” parties of the past for their daylong festival.
